Local businessman and religious leader Daya Narsai Gopal has been remembered as a "quiet, hardworking and meticulous" person.

Gopal passed away peacefully on Friday 24 January at the age of 82.

The owner of Charlie John Laundry, Harry Rama said Mr Gopal "struggled against great odds in the laundry business to supply a fair and friendly service to the community".

Rama says that he remembers Mr Gopal carrying many bundles of laundry upon his back, from his premises in New Street, to customers' homes or offices.

Mr Gopal followed an unusual spiritual path for the modern age as a follower of Brahma Kumaris.

His son Dinesh has followed in his footsteps and is a leader of the Grahamstown branch.

Rama says Gopal was well known by many people in Grahamstown and that he touched their lives with his friendly, cheerful and light hearted personality.

"Many people considered him a great friend and he was well respected for his humble nature. He will not only be missed by the Grahamstown community, but by the many people who knew him."
