Grahamstown has been invited to form a ‘Human Chain’ linking Ncame Street to Somerset Street on 21 February.

Grahamstown has been invited to form a ‘Human Chain’ linking Ncame Street to Somerset Street on 21 February.

A stakeholder's meeting will be held on Monday 3 February at 5pm at City Hall to discuss all logistics for the event.

Organisers hope to recruit over 5000 locals to link arms in a symbolic show of Grahamstown’s commitment to bridge old divides and live Mandela’s legacy, the organisers said in a statement.

Initiated by Rhodes University and organised by a Grahamstown team led by project manager Roger Domingo, the idea follows from the success of the Human Chain held in Cape Town on Mandela Day in 2013.

The idea is to create a public space in which "all people in Grahamstown, young and old, may come together to pay tribute, reflect on Madiba’s legacy and our continued struggles for social justice for all", the statement said.

In the weeks building up to the forming of the Human Chain and after the Human Chain is formed, “A Living Legacy” events such as services, dialogues and public art activities will be hosted around Grahamstown.

Members of the public are invited to organise one of these events and all facilitators of “A Living Legacy events”, artists and media representatives are urged to attend the Monday meeting.
