A local woman has opened a criminal case against a police officer who allegedly knocked her unconscious at the Grahamstown police station last Wednesday 8 January.
The woman has opened a case of assault against the officer, her brother, who she said hit her "very hard" to the ground, breaking her spectacles.
She said she "woke up from the floor feeling dizzy" and felt "degraded" about being assaulted in front of her brother's police colleagues.
She said she had approached her brother to report being regularly abused by her 21-year-old nephew (the son of her deceased younger brother), who stole her money to support his drug habit.
"If I ask this young man to do anything at home, he won't listen to me – but I'm the one who is working and doing everything inside the house," she said.
The woman is receiving counselling for depression at Fort England, which she claims was induced by the behaviour of her family.
She recently resigned from her nursing post at Settlers Hospital.
Responding to questions about the incident police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said a case of assault common is being investigated.
"An internal investigation is also under way," she said.
The police officer, according to Govender, has opened a charge of crimen injuria which is also under investigation.
Both dockets will be forwarded to the public prosecutor for a decision, she said.
