Taverns are making life hell for Eluxolweni residents. At a meeting in Noluthando Hall on Monday 11 November, residents asked the Mayor to do something about an open field they say is used by drunks and thieves associated with nearby taverns.

When Grocott's Mail visited the area this week, resident Thembeka Galela said a lot of robberies happen on the open land next to her home.

"Even yesterday I heard sounds outside my house," she said. "We can't even send our kids to the shops because it is not safe."

Galela's niece, Phumza, believes nearby taverns are the source of the problems. She said she was recently attacked by thieve,s who made off with her cellphone.

"People come from the taverns in Joza drunk and start fights on this field and cause all sorts of problems for residents," she said.
Even during the day, residents don't feel safe.

"I have just moved here from Port Elizabeth, but residents have warned me about that field," said Buyile Roji. He says there's no time when it is safe to walk there.

Ward Committee member Mazwi Dyasi says the criminals are not local.

"I cannot point at anyone's child and say they have attacked anyone in this area," he said. "These are people who walk past this area, but they are not from here," he said.

Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender was not available for comment at the time of publishing.
