It's shoulders down and eyes up, as 109 dancers from the Amaphiko township dance project do their final preparations for the Annual Association of International Dance Teachers Modern and Hip-Hop Dance Exams.

With five days to go, project co-ordinator Wendy Stamper is confident that more distinctions are on the way. "There has been a great improvement this year," Stamper said on Friday 8 November.

Amaphiko works with seven township schools with dancers ranging from Grade 1 to matric. The exams will take place at Rhodes University and the examiner is Elminer Davies, from Johannesburg.

"We have entered 13 different dance levels, from pre-grades to the gold badge and hip hop," said the group's publicity manager Ziyanda Songongo. "We are delighted to invite everyone to come and join us for the hip hop exam at 2.30pm on Friday 15 November."

The exam venue is the Box Theatre at the Rhodes drama department theatre complex.

"Members of the public are also invited to our parents’ demonstration on Wednesday 22 November, in celebration of our 20 years as a project," Songongo said.

Amaphiko is a project of the Grahamstown Foundation and is supported by Rhodes University Drama Department.
