Grahamstown police are looking for a 56-year-old taxi driver in connection with the murder of Fingo Village teacher and community leader Siphokazi Tom.

Grahamstown police are looking for a 56-year-old taxi driver in connection with the murder of Fingo Village teacher and community leader Siphokazi Tom.

In a statement released on Monday 28 October, police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender urged anyone who might have seen taxi driver Mlimi Niconn Mboniswa to contact the police.

The announcement comes as community leaders pledged their support for the investigation of Tom's murder.

More than 500 mourners and well-wishers flocked to the Grahamstown city hall on Tuesday 22 October to celebrate the life of the Fikizolo Primary school teacher, who was stabbed to death in front of her 15-year-old son a week before.

The gruesome murder of the well-known teacher and church leader shocked the community and Govender said they had rallied in support of the police's efforts.

In yesterday's statement Govender said Tom, who was in her mid-40s, was attacked and killed at her home in D Street.

"The incident took place at approximately 2am on 16 October while the victim was asleep. Her son aged 15 was also in the house at the time."

Govender said Mlimi is a taxi driver and was last seen operating between Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown.

"He may be able to assist the SAPS with their investigation," Govender said.

Anyone who may be able to provide the police with information regarding Mlimi's whereabouts is urged to contact any of the following police officers: Detective Captain Riaan Havenga at 082 416 8279, Detective Warrant Officer Anton Annandale at 082 301 9703, Detective Warrant Officer Zukile Mpiyane at 078 274 0872 or Detective Warrant Officer John Manzana at 082 779 7117.

People with information can also visit their nearest police station.
