Lungelwa Manona was involved in a car crash in Grahamstown this week on the eve of a memorial service for her late father, Dr Cecil Manona. The retired Rhodes academic died in Port Elizabeth on Monday 7 October.

Lungelwa was driving one of the cars involved in a collision between two vehicles on Wednesday 16 October, on a section of road between Phaphamani and Zolani townships.

The Toyota Condor she was driving belongs to well known local businessman and friend of the Manona family, Victor Monaheng.

Monaheng told Grocott’s Mail he had lent the car to Lungelwa so she could carry out preparations for her father's memorial service and funeral.

Cecil Manona’s memorial service was held at St Peter's Chapel on Thursday 17 October.

His funeral was held on Saturday 19 October at Ncumisa Khondlo Centre in Peddie.

Lungelwa Manona is married to Thabo Makgoba, Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town.

Police spokesperson Mali Govender confirmed Wednesday’s incident and said no one was charged.
