Lieutenant-colonel Johan Botha ended this year's body-building season with a bronze trophy from the national championships in hand, but he won't be resting on his laurels until things heat up again next year.
He won't be sitting around and waiting, he said, but plans to up his game – and muscle mass – for the next big challenge.
"I will be working this off-season to add at least about six to 10 kilograms," the Grahamstown policeman said. "I now weigh 95kg."
Botha travelled to Cape Town as a member of the Eastern Province team competing in the South African championships on 5 October.
He said about 130 body builders from different provinces took part in the competition held at the Bellville Civic Centre.
"The experience was overwhelming," he said. "It was very nice but the nicest thing was to come back with a trophy for Grahamstown and the Eastern Cape."
Botha placed third in the Masters category.
"I am hoping to maintain the standard for next year and do even better."
He thanked the Makana Mayor's office for making his trip to nationals possible and his team mates at the Makana Natural Body Building and Fitness Club.
He also mentioned his station manager, Brigadier Morgan Govender, and Rhodes University Health Suite Manager Felix Munyai who offer constant support.
On 21 September Botha came third in men's over-90kg category in the World Physique Federation SA champs for police in East London.
Over the last weekend of September he also competed against international bodybuilders at the World Physique Federation body building show at Gold Reef City in Johannesburg.
There he came fourth in the men's over-90kg category.
