A group of Rhodes University students chained themselves to an oak tree they claim is around 140 years old in protest against Rhodes University's latest expansion plans.
Rhodes student societies RU Green and Rhodes Legal Activism came together to protest against the new Rhodes Life Sciences building, which is planned for a patch of woodland behind the Barratt lecture theatre complex.
It contains several indigenous plants and a couple of oak trees as old as the university itself. They plan to hand a petition to university authorities.
