Five people were killed in two accidents on the N2 on Friday 27 and Sunday 29 September.
Three people were killed in a head-on collision on the N2 near the Shamwari turn-off towards Nanaga on Friday 27 September.
Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said the accident happened at about 3.30pm. "A sedan with a family of five was travelling from the direction of Grahamstown towards Port Elizabeth, while an Avanza carrying six passengers was travelling in the opposite direction," she said.
The cars collided after one was apparently in the process of overtaking, police said. A 38-year-old woman and a toddler travelling in the sedan were killed on impact.
One person in the Avanza was also killed.
Govender said police are investigating a case of culpable homicide. The woman and toddler have been identified as Nokuthula Cynthia Mlumbi, 38, and 4-year-old Muntana Akhtar.
Two more people were killed on the N2 on Sunday in a crash involving three vehicles.
At about 5pm Govender said it is alleged that a bakkie coming from Grahamstown veered onto the wrong lane while trying to overtake "and collided with [a]vehicle travelling from Port Elizabeth".
The bakkie came to a standstill after colliding with a wall. The bull bar had come loose in the process and damaged the sedan that it was following, police said.
The occupants of the bakkie, relatives Thembuxolo, 53, and Phumlani Nongongo,17, were killed. No people in the two sedans involved sustained "life-threatening injuries", Govender said.
