    Samuel’s birds break season record

    Graham Samuel’s blue bar cock was the first bird home in the 16th race of the Grahamstown Racing Pigeon Club season.

    Graham Samuel’s blue bar cock was the first bird home in the 16th race of the Grahamstown Racing Pigeon Club season.

    The race took place on Saturday 14 September from Jan Kempdorp, near Warrenton in the Northern Cape.

    This is the first occasion this race point has been utilised to date and covers a distance of 626km as the crow flies, to Grahamstown.
    Club media officer Peter Bailie said the weather conditions for the race were ideal.

    The birds were released at 7am with the first bird in the any age category, Samuel’s blue bar cock, arriving home at 2.05pm, recording a velocity of 1454.8683 metres per minute (87kph).

    Following three minutes later was Lorenzo Doyle’s red hen.

    Samuel’s birds put in a notable and excellent performance by obtaining five positions in the top 10, the most positions obtained by a fancier this season in a single race.

    In the yearling event Ciske McKaiser once again demonstrated his prowess in flying pigeons by obtaining first, fifth and ninth positions.

    Second place went to Lorenzo Doyle five minutes later.

    All point scoring positions were closed after 24 minutes of the first arrival.
