Family and close friends of a popular DJ killed in a car accident on Dr Jacob Zuma Drive paid tribute to him in a packed City Hall on Thursday 12 September.

Scores flocked to the Grahamstown City Hall on Thursday to pay their last respects to Lungisa "Mayuyu" Tala.

Tala was killed when his car rammed into two vehicles after speeding down Beaufort Street.

Paramedics struggled to remove Tala's body from his Golf GTi. He was the only person killed in the accident involving three vehicles late last Friday night. Eyewitnesses say his car ploughed into a silver Toyota Corolla before hitting a minibus taxi near the intersection of Beaufort Street and Dr Jacob Zuma Drive, just after 11pm on Friday 6 September.

The 31-year-old DJ was born in Tantyi and attended Tantyi Lower Primary before going on to Archie Mbolekwa Higher Primary. After completing his matric at Ntsika Secondary School, Tala pursued his music career at Qhayiya College, where he studied sound engineering.

His childhood friend DJ Ivy Madyo was one of the speakers at the memorial service. Speaking about his friend, Madyo said they met in 1996 through their passion for music.

"He came to me and told me that he wanted to become a DJ. We used to go to Bra Pat's house and I would show him how to use the equipment," he said. After this, Madyo said, they had become good friends until Tala's tragic death on Friday 6 September.

Tala's friend Xolani Mbeleni, who was with his during his last hours, delivered a eulogy during the emotional memorial service.

Tala leaves behind both his parents, his sisters, brothers, uncles and aunts. The popular DJ also leaves his children, Olwethu, Migcobo and Ashante.

He will be buried at Nombulelo Secondary on Saturday 14 September.
