A ward councillor has once again been cleared of assault charges at the request of the people who accused her of assault.
The ANC councillor appeared briefly in the Grahamstown Magistrate's Court on Wednesday 11 September.
The case was scheduled for trial on Tuesday, but the man who had accused her failed to come to court. The case was postponed to Wednesday.
The 46-year-old councillor appeared briefly with her co-accused, a 35-year-old man, before magistrate Nomnikelo Jebese withdrew both the assault charges at the complainant's request.
The man had opened a criminal case against the councillor after he was allegedly beaten up by about 15 people, including the councillor, in the early hours of 8 June.
Grahamstown police were investigating a case of serious assault. According to police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender, the man says he was woken by a knock on the door followed by a mob that entered his house after kicking the door down.
Govender says the man was allegedly taken out of his house and assaulted.
This councillor also faced another charge of assault this year after allegedly engaging in a brawl at Makana Resort on 23 June.
The woman who claimed to be attacked by the councillor said she was enjoying Youth Day celebrations at the resort when someone gave her some meat. "The suspect approached [her]claiming that the meat was hers and then an argument ensued, followed by the pulling of hair, face-scratching and name-calling," Govender said.
This case was also withdrawn at the request of the complainant on 2 August.
