Port Alfred’s own craft brewery, The Little Brewery On The River, was recently rated one of the Top Five destination breweries in South Africa by the country’s premier travel and tourism magazine, Getaway.

There are no fewer than 38 craft breweries throughout the country, so competition for a Top Five rating was indeed fierce.

First established in 1998 as the Coelacanth Brewery, this river-side brewery had something of a checkered history and ceased commercial brewing in 2002.

However, new owner Ian Cook and brew master Colin Coetzee breathed new life into the business in 2008.

With three different brews, this small but excellent brewery has gained popularity throughout the Eastern Cape, and has become something of a tourist attraction for Port Alfred.

The other top-rated breweries are in Paarl, Cullinan, Rustenburg and the Natal Midlands.

Coetzee said, “We are proud that we were able to have the Eastern Cape represented in those breweries selected by Getaway, and we welcome any visitors who may want to come on a brewery tour and see us at work.”

The brewery is at 20 Wharf Street, Port Alfred. To get in touch with the business call 046 624 5705 or email cheers@littlebrewery.co.za.
