Winter kid mohair fetched its highest price ever at the second mohair sale of the 2013 winter season that took place in Port Elizabeth this week.

A bale of superstyle 25 micron kid’s mohair sold for R400 per kilogram. With 116 448kg on offer on Tuesday 27 August, the offering consisted of good quality mohair with 98% of it sold.

The upward trend in the market continued with the average market indicator gaining 3% to close on R112.14 per kg.

There was good competition among all the buying houses, with a weaker South African currency assisting the greasy wool exporters. It was only the fine adults that couldn’t maintain the upward momentum, mainly due to shorter hair on offer within this sector.

Compared to the previous sale prices were as follows:

    • Kids (winter) up 4.6%
    • Young goats (winter) up 4.3%
    • Fine adults down 6.2%
    • Strong adults unchanged
    • Average up 3%

The next sale will take place on 17 September 2013.
