Municipal workers will ditch local union boss Noluthando Santi after she applied for a job she'd ordered them to boycott.

Members of the Makana branch of the South African Municipal Workers Union toyi-toyied outside the City Hall on Monday 12 August.

Leaders discussed plans to block final interviews for various municipal vacancies.

Samwu chairperson Santi, who is the Mayor’s secretary, was among five candidates shortlisted last Wednesday. Her removal from her position in the union was one of the key issues discussed.

Santi had initially urged union members to boycott the recruitment process on the basis that Samwu had not been consulted.

She had encouraged workers to reject the jobs advertised because proper protocol had not been followed.

“We are not disputing that people be given jobs. All we want is for the correct protocols and procedures to be followed,” said a Samwu member during the meeting on Monday.

Santi said she had applied for the job to safeguard her future.

However, a disgruntled worker said, “She has made a choice, so a constituency meeting needs to be held to plan for bi-elections where Santi must be replaced.”

The union said they would sign a petition and apply for strike action if any new employees were hired without consulting them.
