A new business organisation will be launched next week, following the approval of a co-operation agreement between the municipality and local business at Makana Municipality's latest Local Economic Development (LED) meeting.

The new Makana United Business Chamber is a joint venture between the Grahamstown Business Forum and Makana Development Business Forum.

The municipality has agreed to recognise it as the legitimate representative of organised business in the city. Lungile Mxube, Chairperson of the Chamber and local business owner, said until now local business had lacked a united platform.

“We have no intention of taking over the municipal functions,” said Mxube. “Instead we will be involved in consultation and also actively participate in municipal projects.”

The chamber will be officially launched at 4pm on 15 August, at the City Hall. A memorandum of understanding between the Chamber and the municipality has yet to be signed.
