The Women’s Academic Solidarity Association (WASA), based at Rhodes University, will hold a round-table discussion to mark National Women’s Day tomorrow.

The aim of the event, titled ‘Beyond the 50/50 Ideal: Gender, Political Culture, and University Transformation’, is to encourage an intellectual focus on and provide fresh insight into gender transformation in tertiary education.

Gender transformation in South Africa is often equated with achieving the popular 50/50 equity target. But according to the association this ideal still feeds the conservative and reactionary attitudes that continue to govern gender relationships in both the public and private sphere.

The programme will include discussions and presentations from South African academics including researcher, analyst and public speaker Nombonsino Gasa and Phethiwe Matutu, from the Department of Science and Technology.

Talks will include the colourfully titled ‘Mini-skirts and full panties' and ‘Imagining the “un-gendered” university: Creating universities that are safe for all’.

The event will take place in the Rhodes University Council Chambers from 9am. Grocott’s Mail will report on the event in a coming edition.
