The National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) announced a nationwide recall of all Dettol Disinfectant Liquid products and the Domestos Extended Germ Kill range last Tuesday.
The NRCS warned that the products were unsafe.
Dettol and Domestos have denied this claim, and say the withdrawal is a result of administrative issues.
The regulator discovered the products during routine inspections at retail stores. NCRS general manager Thomas Madzivhe subsequently released a statement that said that the products were being recalled because they might pose a health hazard.
He said that the NRCS was unsure of Dettol’s compliance with user safety standards. “It fails to meet our requirements and as such we urge the public not to use the product.”
A spokesperson for Dettol South Africa however said that there are no safety concerns and that the reason for the recall is that the products are being imported illegally from the UK by a third-party trader who has no direct links with Dettol.
He said that all Dettol products that are currently on the shelves are “safe, effective and compliant with regulatory requirements and standards.”
Dettol SA said that they will work with the NRCS to root out all illegally imported Dettol Lime and Lemongrass Disinfectant Liquid.
The Domestos Extended Germ Kill range has apparently also passed all safety regulations, but has failed to comply with the labelling regulations stipulated by the NRCS.
Pick 'n Pay Grahamstown manager Johan Pienaar said they don’t stock the products in question.
The local Checkers management was not aware of the situation.
They had none of the product on their shelves. The NRCS is working with the South African Revenue Service to control ports and ensure that illegal products do not find their way into the market.
