Mugg & Bean will not open a branch in Grahamstown in the near future, but instead the lot will be used as a parking space.

Rumours have circulated that developments on 47 New Street, previously home to the Knock Shop, signalled the imminent arrival of the franchise coffee shop.

Instead, additional parking space for Pepper Grove Mall is being cleared.

Rob Beer, of Beer Properties, who bought the property from Andrew and Diane Wakeford of the Knock Shop earlier this year, said: “At this stage we are simply demolishing the additions to the Knock Shop building and will be providing more parking in the mall.”

Nicole Louw of Famous Brands, owners of the Mugg & Bean franchise, said there were no set plans for a Mugg & Bean to open in Grahamstown yet.

“We often investigate opportunities for new sites, but nothing is confirmed yet.”

Suzette and Desmond Westcott, Wimpy franchise owners, have expressed interest in opening a Mugg & Bean. Their application to open a franchise at 47 New Street was however turned down by the company’s head office.

The Westcotts are still very interested in opening a Mugg & Bean in Grahamstown, "but it is not going to happen any time this year,” said Suzette.
