Development of the R1.7-billion Bay West super regional mall in Port Elizabeth is forging ahead, with developers unveiling plans for a massive ice rink within the modern two-storey centre.
Briefing media on site recently, project manager Chris Beech said the project was progressing magnificently with principal developer Murray & Roberts on track to complete the mall’s construction in March 2015.
The mall is set to open its doors later that month. With 70% of the mall’s tenants for its more than 250 retail outlets already secured – including Game, Ster Kinekor, Truworths, Edcon Group, Woolworths, Pick n Pay and Checkers – Beech said plans for a 2 500m² ice rink were at an advanced stage.
“Negotiations are well advanced to include the ice rink,” he told the media.
The last time the city had a permanent ice rink was in the 1990s, with the Jadene Ice Rink at the old tramways building near the Port Elizabeth Harbour entrance.
