Makana finally has an answer to the complaints of people living near the municipal dump, where fires emit thick black smoke into residential areas.
According to municipal Communications Officer Yoliswa Ramokolo, the municipality is currently looking for a new site for the dump which is removed from households.
"They are looking at a new site away from the environment of the people," she said.
"It is going to be budgeted for in the current financial year and there will also be new management for the dump."
Although the municipality has not yet identified the dump's new location, Ramokolo said it would be prioritised.
"The municipality feels the plight of the residents, this is pollution and it is affecting the health of the residents."
Grahamstown residents have complained for months about the stinking smoke that hangs over the city almost every day because of illegal fires at the municipal dump site.
While visiting the dump site in February, municipal spokesperson Mncedisi Boma told Grocott's Mail there was no proper management of the site, and the municipality would attend to it.
He blamed people who were living at the site illegally.
"We will appoint two people that will be overseeing the running of the site so that it can operate to the required standard," Boma said in February.
This has not taken place.
