An elderly man who was attacked after getting off a long-distance bus in Bathurst Street has been released from hospital.
A relative who lives in Grahamstown, Anna-Marie Schoeman, says he's still frail however and is taking time to heal.
Yesterday Schoeman told Grocott's Mail that the old man had been released from hospital this week. "He is out of hospital now, but his heart is still very weak," she said.
Schoeman says her relative can't do much for himself and has to stay in Grahamstown for the time being.
"The doctors said there was some improvement in his condition. He is getting better but he is resting and taking time to heal."
The 82-year-old man was allegedly attacked by young men who were trying to mug his wife two weekends ago.
The elderly couple had gotten off a bus in the early hours when a young man approached them and asked if they were waiting for a taxi. After saying they were waiting for someone to pick them up, the man left.
Schoeman says the man who initially approached the couple returned with another man before allegedly attacking them that Sunday morning.
Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said two men were arrested after local security guards followed two suspicious-looking men in the vicinity of the bus stop that morning.
The guards gave chase and managed to catch both men after they witnessed them drop a handbag and try to run away.
Govender said the police are investigating a case of possession of suspected stolen property.
