You haven’t lived in G’town till…
You’ve seen it through the camera obscura at the Observatory Museum on Bathurst Street.
The very kind gentleman who mans the camera and gives you the tour will explain how it works. But very simply put, it combines a series of mirrors with the basic principles of a pin-hole camera to give you a live action show of what is happening all around G’town.
And you’re seeing it all not by looking up or around, but down onto the viewing table before you. It is a surreal experience to watch Grahamstown going about its business ‘on a plate’ in front of you.
And it’s made possible by one of a handful of such 19th-century viewing devices left on Earth. We are lucky to have it.
Go and enjoy seeing your town from a completely unique perspective!
