Natasha Meister has been labelled the new blues queen due to her soulful Motown sound – something of a mash-up between John Mayer and Norah Jones.

Trained in electric and acoustic guitar, this 22 year old Canadian-born singer and songwriter represented South Africa as the first woman to be endorsed by both Fender, of the US, and Lakewood, of Germany.

During her show at the Lowlander this week, Meister named her influences as BB King and Stevie Wonder. This was evident in her revival of her idols’ greatest hits.

Her song Safe in the Silence is exquisite, drawing the audience in and engulfing them in her beautiful melodies.

She said although her family had always appreciated music, her father was the driving force behind her learning guitar at the age of 14.

From there, it was upwards and onwards.

Meister moved from Canada to Cape Town at the age of 20 to pursue her life’s ambition.

She said she looked forward to the day she could go on stage alongside Eric Clapton.

For now, she is embracing her smaller, more intimate shows, as it gave her the chance to connect with her fans on a personal level.

She explained that the blues market is a difficult place for someone her age to make it big; however, this does not deter her.

She said she always aimed to put her heart and soul into every show.

Meister has performed at gigs across the country including Splashy Fen, Synergy Live, and the Oyster and Champagne festival.
