After operating without a full board and having trouble with regular broadcasting, a number of community members were coopted onto the Radio Grahamstown board last Thursday.
Station manager Pamela Zondani said they'd been running with only three active interim board members since last year, meaning they were functioning unconstitutionally.
In a public meeting held at BB Zondani Hall, station executives, presenters and community members elected the following new board members: Dr Nomalanga Mkize, Rev Nkosinathi Ngesi, Vusi Mdlankomo, Phoka Tlali, Zwelakhe Thwani, Andre Jourdan, Tony Lankester and Zondani.
The meeting was supposed to be an annual general meeting but was changed to special general meeting because it didn't meet the necessary requirements.
Interim board member Siyabulela Mfecane had to choose between being a presenter or a board member. He said his calling at Radio Grahamstown was to present.
Mfecane was one the people who were helping to bring order to the station.
Eastern Cape Community Radio Forum chairperson Vuyelwa Mdazana, who was present at the meeting, said the new board must look to the station constitution for all the guidelines of how the station should be run.
She added that they will always offer their support to Radio Grahamstown.
Zondani said since last September the board effectively only had three members; herself, Ngesi and Mfecane.
Other interim board members either resigned or weren't actively involved.
She said newly-elected members will fill the gaps and help the station operate on a regular basis.
"I am happy that we have a fully fleshed board of trustees that can help our station to operate very well," Zondani said.
