The Grahamstown Riding Club’s Megan Du Preez excelled against both junior and adult riders at the 2013 Eastern Cape Pony Rider Championships at the PE Riding Club last weekend from 17 to 19 May.

A Grade 6 pupil at Kingswood College, Megan won the supreme working championship of the show.

Riding Rocky II, Megan finished first in the Working Hunter Pony and Working Riding Pony classes, which put her in contention for the working pony championship.

She then swept to victory against stiff competition from riders hailing from other parts of the province to win the working pony championship.

This, in turn, put her in contention for the Supreme working championship – in which she had to compete against riders her own age as well as adults.

Megan went on to beat both the junior and adult working riders in this class to win the Supreme working championship of the show.

She did this despite a bad fall in the EC Pony Rider Show Jumping 1m-1.25m Championship.

Her pony tripped over a jump and fell, sending Megan flying head-first into the next jump.

After a short back-board trip to the ambulance, she dusted herself off and went on to clinch a top title.

Megan has put her name forward to be selected for the EC children’s team, which is expected to be announced shortly.

This team will compete against all other provincial teams in the 2013 Pony Rider South African National Equestrian Championships being held at the PE Riding Club from 28 June to 6 July.

“The Grahamstown Riding Club is extremely proud of Megan’s achievements”, said riding club chair Lesley McQuaid.
