Local amateur boxer Anele Bheyi is jet-setting off to Germany later this year after being selected to represent the Eastern Cape in an international province-on-province competition.

Bheyi is one of 12 boxers chosen from districts in the Eastern Cape to join forces and form the strongest possible team to go to Germany.

In a recent Eastern Cape Boxing Organisation (Ecabo) tournament held at the Orient Theatre Hall in East London, Ecabo coach Luyanda Dibela said Bheyi did very well.

In his match against Mzwamadoda Bhikitsha, from Nkonkobe Municipality, he won on points in three rounds.

The Grahamstown boxer, belonging to the Masibambane club, will spend August training in East London.

He and the other Eastern Cape boxers will then travel to Germany in September.

Once in Germany, they will visit the Lower Saxony Boxing Federation and test the strength and skill of the German province's boxers.

In an interview with Grocott's Mail Bheyi said he was happy to be selected for the Ecabo team and "It's going to be my first time travelling outside the country".

He will pick up the pace of his training in preparation for the international tournament, he said, as he doesn't want to disappoint the people who support him as a boxer.

Bheyi only began boxing last year and has already won gold and silver medals in different tournaments.

September's tournament in Germany will be the third amateur boxing tournament between these two regions, following visits from Germany last year where local boxers went to box in Motherwell.
