Three men arrested after a high-speed chase this week made their first court appearance on Wednesday.

Monday's drama unfolded as police, security guards and a local businessman pursued three men after a robbery in High Street. The men's car plunged into homes in Zolani informal settlement and police arrested the men – two aged 38 and one 59.

Police said men had accosted and robbed a shop employee of a large sum of money around 10am on Monday. The employee had been on his way to the bank to deposit the cash, when two men robbed him and fled with the cash.

In a statement issued shortly after the incident, police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said, "The owner gave chase and followed closely with his private vehicle. During the high speed chase the suspects fired shots at the owner who returned fire with his private licensed firearm."

On Wednesday Govender told Grocott's Mail the money had been recovered and the crashed vehicle confiscated by the police. It would be part of the evidence against the men.

"The vehicle is licensed, but it will be kept by the police and will form part of the investigation," she said.

The men appeared in the Grahamstown Magistrate's court on Wednesday and the case was postponed to next Wednesday for a formal bail application.
