Residents of Grahamstown looking to get fit or play organised sport can still join many of the sporting codes offered by Rhodes University, says Head of Sports at the university Mandla Gagayi.
While registration for students – which is charged to their respective student accounts – ends on 8 March, any Grahamstown resident or non-student can join any of the Rhodes sports clubs, as long as there are no existing clubs or sports offering the same service in the Grahamstown area.
“Our sports policy allows non-Rhodes people to join our clubs only if there are no similar clubs in the community,” he said.
This offer covers a wide range of clubs and sports, from table tennis to fly fishing.
Though Rhodes University gives a subsidy on sports registration fees to all its students, this option is sadly not available to the general public or even to Rhodes University staff.
“The university subsidy only applies to students,” said Gagayi. “Staff and outside members must pay full subscriptions as determined by club committees.”
Gagayi also said that the Rhodes University Sports Administration offers administrative support and workshops to community clubs who ask them for assistance.
“Our role is to assist community clubs by offering administration workshops so that they can better manage their clubs,” he said.
Non-students looking to join clubs can do so by paying a cash subscription to the relevant club, whose contact details can be obtained through the Sports Administration staff.
Membership is open for the whole year.
