The Rhodes University Alex Mullins Hall was abuzz with excitement and noise as students came to the official sports sign-up evening on Tuesday, 19 February.
The event offered new and returning students a variety of different sporting codes to choose from, catering for all different tastes and needs.
Thirty-four sporting codes boasted display tables at the event, with club promoters roaming the hall to find students who could be convinced to join.
The university also offered financial aid students the opportunity to sign up for two clubs or sports of their choice at no cost.
The event was a huge success, with many clubs reporting dramatically increased numbers.
The rowing club reported their highest number of new rowers in years with over 60 new members signing up within the first hour.
Other clubs reported similar successes. “There’s been a lot of increased enthusiasm. It’s going well this year, especially for the smaller clubs,” said Richard Gowar, a second-year student who serves on the table tennis committee.
However, the event went beyond the traditional ‘big three’ of rugby, hockey and soccer.
Anyone looking to learn some self-defence or discipline could choose from four different forms of martial arts; karate, aikido, hayabusa and taekwon-do.
For those who are less keen to get rough and sweaty there were of course plenty of other clubs to choose from including archery, first aid and DanceSport.
