Annoyed residents experienced yet another unannounced water outage on Friday from the morning until the afternoon.

Water was cut off in the Westhill and industrial areas while the municipality was having new fire hydrants installed.

Acting deputy director of technical and infrastructure services Sithembele Tutuse told Grocott’s Mail, “The people who are installing the fire hydrants switch off the valves and when they are finished they forget to switch them back on”.

When asked why residents hadn’t been given a heads-up about the planned cut while the new equipment was being installed, Tutuse apologised and said it was a mistake not to tell residents.

Next time they will follow up on the contractors so that the valves are switched back on when they are finished, he said.

The municipality contracted Phoenix Fire Protection to replace the old fire hydrants all over town, costing R750 000.

Tutuse said the project will create better access to water when there is a fire.
