A man accused of biting a love rival’s fingers off was acquitted of the assault charges against him at the Grahamstown Magistrate’s Court last week.

The 38-year-old J Street resident was out on warning before appearing for plea and trial on Thursday.

Facing charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, the man was cautioned and discharged.

He was arrested and appeared in court on 10 January after Vusumzi Sandi, 52, opened a case against him.

Sandi, also a J Street resident, had to have one finger on each hand surgically removed following a fight with the 38-year-old man.

The neighbours had reportedly fought over a woman they both considered to be their girlfriend.
