Young tennis champs to play for Albany

The Albany Tennis Championships concluded last weekend with the finals of the different age categories taking place at the Kingswood College tennis courts.

The Albany Tennis Championships concluded last weekend with the finals of the different age categories taking place at the Kingswood College tennis courts.

The first championship rounds took place at courts around Grahamstown over the weekend of 25-27 January, with the exciting finals last Sunday.

Age groups represented in the championships were U10, U12, U14, U16 and U18. The various winners will make up the Albany side to take on Midlands in Grahamstown on Monday, 11 February.

Matches will start at 8.30am and the singles matches will be played over best-of-three sets.

The venues of Monday’s matches against Midlands are: U10 boys at Victoria Primary School, U12 boys and girls at the Diocesan School for Girls (DSG), U14 boys and girls at Kingswood, U16 boys and girls at Rhodes University, U18 boys at Graeme College and U18 girls at the Grahamstown Tennis Club.

 

Results from Sunday’s finals:

  • U10 boys – Murray Bowker (St Andrew’s Prep) beat Ethan Richardson (Graeme College)
  • U10 girls – no entries
  • U12 boys – Dylan Bowker (SAP) beat Melusi Mtshuli (SAP)
  • U12 girls – Amy Mills (Kingswood College) beat Liza Potgieter (Kenton)
  • U14 boys – Chris Long (St Andrew’s College) beat Murray Koster (SAC)
  • U14 girls – Kelsey Purdon (KC) beat Alice Godlonton (DSG)
  • U16 boys – Tom Lane (SAC) beat Cobus van Zyl (KC)
  • U16 girls – Lentha Cullinan (DSG) beat Tanya Buttner (KC)
  • U18 boys – George Chemaly (KC) beat Steven Hulley (KC)
  • U18 girls – Celeste du Toit (KC) beat Amy Preston (DSG).

  • U10 boys – Murray Bowker (SAP), Ethan Richardson (GC), Craig Terblanche (GC), Jurie Norval (SAP), Jarryd Harty (Port Alfred High School), Tom Mills (KC), reserve – Dami Odunugo (KC).
  • U12 boys – Dylan Bowker (SAP), Melusi Mtsuli (SAP), James Sparks (SAP), Riaan Labuschagne (GC), Henning van Zyl (KC), Aaron Richardson (GC), reserve – Jason Thomas (SAP).
  • U12 girls – Amy Mills (KC), Liza Potgieter (Kenton), Zinathi Mbenyanana (KC), Carolina da Costa (KC), Carina Kemp (DSG), Lukho Mbenyanana (KC), reserve – Lauren Poole (DSG).
  • U14 boys – Chris Long (SAC), Murray Koster (SAC), Murray Breetzke (SAC), Mark Amm (GC), Matthew Strachan (KC), Scott Cuthbert (SAP), reserve – Ross Vides (SAC).
