David and Adele Steck have been running the Red Leaf Nursery in Port Alfred for just on two years and they’re loving it.

Their business located in the Hawkins Industrial park, on Alfred Road, has an outside section and an indoor section so that visitors can browse through a wide variety of plants that prefer different types of conditions.

Adele says they came to Port Alfred because they were tired of wasting their time in the traffic in Gauteng and now they can devote their considerable energies to doing want they enjoy most – working with plants.

David is originally from Bloemfontein but since he spent four years at St Andrew’s College in Grahamstown, he is not a stranger to the area – in fact he feels rather comfortable here.

Adele says they cater to a wide range of horticultural interests and often go out to people’s houses so they can advise on the best ways of revitalising a garden that might have lost its sheen.

She says that most of her plants are indigenous, but they do have a selection of beautiful exotic flowers as well.

In an effort to nurture young people’s interests in gardening, Adele hosts a monthly Kiddies Garden Club where children are taught about various aspects of gardening and try their hands at some crafts that can be useful in decorating a garden.

Adele says that although the types of plants change during the year, the Red Leaf Nursery is busy all the time.

If you enjoy spending time at a nursery and would like to sip on a cup of tea while you think about what you’d like to grow, Adele is happy to serve tea, coffee and some light snacks at the nursery.

To contact Adele you can call her at the nursery on 046 624 8530.
