Local hip-hop artist Bongani Spopo, known as B Mac, plans to release his new mix-tape, "It's been a long journey: the change", in April.

In an interview with Grocott's Mail this week, he said the album was about his life's journey. "This is not about me, but people who have played important roles in shaping my life," he said.

Spopo says the 12 tracks, which he is recording in Grahamstown Studios, is a commentary on the social networks and political relationships that got him where he is.

Featuring on various tracks will be Main Event, MP, Hit Fam, Mavesta and Zues – artists with whom he has worked for many years.

"I believe that thousands of hip-hop heads know me. If not them, then their girlfriends," he joked.

Spopo said the mix-tape would unite the community. "I have changed a little bit of my style into something that all people will love -but the most important thing is that this mix-tape is for everyone," he said.

Spopo said he wanted to prove that Grahamstown was a city of many facets, including politics, leadership skills, education and music.

Having got into hip hop at the age of 13, Spopo, has become a rapper, vocalist and producer. His first single, "S'khokho", got 356 downloads in its first week.

However, there is more to Spopo than punch-lining, rhyming and flowing words. Spopo is also the presenter of Art Effects, the Friday evening show at Radio Grahamstown.

He had a close musical relationship with MP, with whom he released the mix-tape "B-Mac Meets MP" in 2010.

Spopo comes from Joza based crew "Black Army", whose mission was to address the political situation and highlight the background of current struggles.

He has shared a stage with many well known artists, including Hoodlum, Ifani, Ohayv and Yahkeem. His Facebook page is "Ladies Love BMac".
