Eastern Cape welterweight boxing champion Mzoxolo Ndwayana took to the ring in Joza's Noluthando Hall on Saturday night to defend his title on home ground.

Eastern Cape welterweight boxing champion Mzoxolo Ndwayana took to the ring in Joza's Noluthando Hall on Saturday night to defend his title on home ground.

Ndwayana, also known as the Black Tiger, faced Mdantsane boxer Jongikhaya Leve in the provincial showdown, beating his challenger on points.

Ndwayana, who is rated number two in the South African welterweight category, said he owed his victory to his home town fans. "Without the support of Grahamstonians I was not going to win the fight. My strength depends on the power of the masses," he said.

Ndwayana thanked his coach and father Bulelani Ndwayana for being a very supportive and encouraging coach. "My father has played a very important role in my life," he said.

Other boxers from as far as Gauteng, the Western Cape and North West province also participated in the tournament, which was well attended by Grahamstown residents, including Makana Executive Mayor Zamuxolo Peter, councillors and boxing officials.

The event was organised by Nyusa Boxing Promotion in conjunction with Makana Municipality and Eastern Cape Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture.
