Former Victoria Girls' High School pupil Sicelokazi Pango became the new face of Makana on Thursday evening. Out of five finalists in the Miss Makana pageant the Extension 3 resident wooed the judges at City Hall and walked away with a new title and role to play in her community.

Currently a first-year student at Wits University in Pretoria, this Grahamstown native says she looks forward to using her new position as a platform to uplift people in the city.

As Miss Makana, Pango plans to use her influence to help community engagement projects and start some campaigns of her own, she told Grocott's Mail. Look out for an in-depth interview with Pango in Grocott's Mail this coming Friday.

Besides finding a local beauty to represent Makana, Bongani Diko of one of the pageant's organisers Ikhaya Theatre Company, said the event aimed to raise awareness about community issues like HIV/Aids and abuse.

The pageant coincided with the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children.

Audience members at the pageant were also entertained by local comedian Tsepiso Nzayo and hip hop artist Mega Bre. The event was organized by Ikhaya Theatre Company with support from Jabez Aids Health Centre and Makana Municipality.
