Die nuwe album van eksperimentele Suid-Afrikaanse kunstenaars The Buckfever Underground is wat sou gebeur as jy hierdie kronkelende paaie en bebosde koppies in musiek vertaal het.

Verkeerdevlei is 'n reis vir die siel – in Engels en Afrikaans – wat sy vertrekpunt in Grahamstad het.

Hy verkeer tussen vreemde droomwêrelde, aangevuur deur voorman Toast Coetzer se bewustheidstroom-styl digkuns en die groep se eklektiese mengsel van rock, jazz en funk. Coetzer en Gilad Hockman, wat toe kitaar gespeel het, het in Grahamstad ontmoet as studente in 1998.

"Grahamstad is 'n amazing plek waar jy eintlik kan maak wat jy wil," sê Coetzer.

"Daar is ruimte vir jou om te eksperimenteer en niemand gee om nie."

As 'n joernalistiek-student op Rhodes het Coetzer gedigte geskryf, en hy en Hockman het hul debuut gemaak met 'Fireside Jams' wat destyds by die Union gehou is.

"Ek sal altyd Grahamstad beskou as die plek wat my inspireer het om woorde te skryf wat later, teen alle odds, songs geword het," grap Coetzer.

Jon Savage sluit later by die duo aan op die keyboard, met Stephen Timm op dromme en Righard Kapp op elektriese kitaar.

The Buckfever Underground se musiek ontwyk definisie, en hulle het Verkeerdevlei oor een naweek opgeneem.

"Ons is 'n improv band en maak dinge op soos ons aangaan," sê Coetzer. "Ek het wel 'n pak lirieke by my en luister na hoe die band speel."

Dan sing en praat hy lirieke wat hy voel pas by die musiek.

"Ek luister na [die musiek]en probeer die gevoelswaarde daarvan iewers in my lirieke opspoor en weerspieel."

Die produk van hierdie unieke benadering is alles behalwe onverfynd: dit is 'n verontrustigende kombinasie van musiek en digkuns wat 'n reeks emosies ontroer in die luisteraar.
