Grahamstown pools hosted the highly anticipated inter-provincial water polo action between Eastern Province and Border teams last Saturday. EP who will be hosting the much bigger inter-provincial tournament in December, incorporating all teams, eventually came out on top after a full day of fixtures between the two sporting provinces. Several boys’ and girls’ teams from U13, U14, U15, U16, U19 and even the men’s and women’s teams took part, with Albany also being represented by four junior teams, falling under the EP banner. The Diocesan School for Girls, Kingswood College and St Andrew’s College pools were a hive of activity from 8am on Saturday until late that afternoon. The highlight of the day was the lunch-time entertainment at Kingswood provided by the men’s and women’s encounters. EP eventually won the men’s game with Border winning the women’s match. Tournament organiser and head of sport at Kingswood Pieter Serfontein said this seemed to be the pattern of the day, where Border’s girls’ teams generally proved to be too strong for EP and conversely the EP boys seemed significantly stronger than the Border boys at most levels. EP won 14 of the 24 games, with Border winning seven and three matches ended in a draw. “The event was a resounding success for Grahamstown, the three schools involved and for water polo in the area,” Serfontein said, adding that the sport seems to be growing at a pleasing rate in the area. “The fact that we can play host to an event such as this is evidence of this.” The December tournament will be held in Port Elizabeth from 11-14 December at a number of swimming pools across PE. Newton Park will be the main pool venue.
