Rhodes University has been awarded R170 million by the Department of Higher Education and Training for new buildings and facilities on campus.

The funds provide for a R100m life sciences building, a R31m school of languages building and a new student residence and the renovation of residences and halls valued at R36m. The costs of the fully completed life sciences and languages buildings are estimated at R200m and R60m.

The national department funds will cover the first phase of the new buildings. R24m will also be spent on improvements to Pharmacy facilities and science laboratories. R3m will be spent on improving facilities for students and staff with special needs.

Rhodes is required to invest R30m of its own funds so that over the next three years R200m will be spent on new infrastructure. These planned developments are in addition to a new R17m teacher education building currently under construction, and various small upgrades and refurbishments.

Previous funding received from the higher education department resulted in a spectacular new R75m library complex, postgraduate research facilities, student residences and halls, and state-of-the-art science equipment.
