Graeme College boys took advantage of last Thursday's hot weather to don their athletics gear and give their best performances at the school's sports day. Three old records fell at the events held on the school's Somerset Field and there were a few close shaves for athletes who nearly surpassed the efforts of their predecessors. Dallin Blignaut broke the U15 shot put record with a new throwing distance of 12,9 metres. The old record of 12,54m was set by A Banfield in 2009. New records were also set for both the U13 and U14 staggered relays. Apart from the new records created, two highlights of the day were Abongile Hashe’s attempt on Brett Graham’s open high jump record of 1.86,8m and Josiah Twum-Boafo’s attempt on D Watson’s 1969 record in the U15 100m final. Hashe cleared 1,85m while Twum-Boafo ever so narrowly missed the best 100m time of 11,50 seconds. He ran it in 11,54 seconds. For his 100m record attempt however, Twum-Boafo was awarded the Bailie Trophy for the most outstanding overall performance of the day, while Hashe was awarded the Powell Trophy for best field performance of the day. The Victor Ludorum award went to Afika Shwempe who placed first in the 3 000m, 1 500m and 800m races. He also came second in the 400m – all in the Open age category. Young Kamva Ntapu placed first in the 300m, 1 500m and 800m U7 races. Wiles House was the winner of the day with 731 points, followed by Hutton (681), Vernal (635) and Neilson (632). Medal and trophy winners were: Most Outstanding U7 Athlete – Kamva Mazamisa Most Outstanding U8 Athlete – Lagon Oerson Most Outstanding U9 Athlete – Cameron Rafferty Most Outstanding U10 Athlete – Jayden Roesstorff Most Outstanding U11 Athlete – Aaron Richardson Most Outstanding U12 Athlete – Brendan Gouws Most Outstanding U13 Athlete – Donovan Brits Most Outstanding U14 Athlete – Kamva Ntapu Narshai Trophy (Best U15 sprinter) – Josiah Twum-Boafo Smith Trophy (Most Outstanding U15 Athlete) – Mita Sixaka Howell Trophy (Most Outstanding U16 Athlete) – Lwazi Kamana Sieberhagen Trophy (Winners of the Ladder Relay) – Vernal Powell Trophy (Best Field Performance of the Day) – Abongile Hashe Coetzer Trophy (Best Track Performance of the Day) – Zukile Dyantyi Bailie Trophy (Most Outstanding Overall Performance of the Day) – Josiah Twum-Boafo Victor Ludorum – Afika Shwempe.
