Rhodes University's Prof Christopher McQuaid was one of 22 researchers to be awarded an A rating at a ceremony held in Cape Town last Thursday evening.

The prestigious National Research Foundation (NRF) awards are an annual celebration of the country's leading researchers who have been recognised by their peers for the impact, quality and the exemplary nature of their research outputs. The A, and P rating categories, which were awarded at the ceremony are based on the NRF rating and evaluation system which is centred on peer review and enjoys international prestige in the global research community.

McQuaid has done his research into areas of biology, supply-side ecology, invasion biology, phylogeography and upwelling in South Africa’s coastal regions and the Southern Ocean areas. As a seasoned researcher, he has provided a steady output that has influenced much of what is understood about the Earth’s oceans.

In addition to the A and P ratings, an inaugural Science Team Award was presented to the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Bid Team
