Tantyi residents returning home from a local tavern discovered the body of a 20-year-old man near M Street in the early hours of Sunday.

Grocott's Mail arrived after a tip-off and spoke to one of the first people on the scene. The man, who refused to divulge his name, said he had gone to the body and felt for a pulse. "I couldn't feel anything. That's when I realised that he was dead and we called the police," he told Grocott's Mail.

When paramedics arrived at the scene around 5am, they declared dead the man – whose name is known to Grocott's Mail. A paramedic at the scene said by the time they examined him, he had been dead for a while.

Police spokesperson Mali Govender said a fight had ensued after an argument about beer. "According to information received, the suspect wanted a sip of the deceased's beer and when he refused, [the suspect]allegedly stabbed him on his upper body," Govender said.

She said the police had opened a case of murder and that a suspect had been arrested. Hours before the man's death, the Zolani community had buried Melikhaya Tshobo, 20, killed by a mob the previous week.

Grocott's Mail reported last week that Tshobo's mother Nomfundo had been walking to town on Saturday 1 September to collect her grant money when she saw a crowd gathered and discovered to her horror her son's body lying in the road.

Some people in the mob had accused him of breaking a window; others claimed he had raped an old woman. His funeral was on Saturday. The police have not yet arrested any suspects.
