Insipiring people to choose a healthier, more active lifestyle was one of the aims of last Friday's 12-hour Cyclathon at the Rhodes University Health Suite, which attracted 256 participants and started at 8am.
Three Indoor Cycling members – Julia Trollip, Kelcey Brock and Dominic Hodge – completed the entire 12 hours, while most of the remaining 22 bikes in the hall saw different participants every hour.
Organiser of the event and Indoor Cycling manager Lindi Lombard said the cyclathon had been “really successful”, adding that many Grahamstown residents had participated. While the final figures have not yet been added up, the money raised from the cyclathon will go to the Hands to Hands Charity Group.
The local charity provides emotional, spiritual, physical and material support to the most needy in the community of Makana. The charity has identified a community of about 65 shanty houses, all poor in condition.
“The objective is to bring an element of comfort to the families living in the shacks by providing them with mattresses,” said Raymond. Indoor Cycling instructors led the hourly sessions with various themes. While many participants attempted to keep up with the instructors, many were there only to show their support.
