Local drivers with a need for speed are going to have to drive more carefully once Makana's two new traffic cops start doing the rounds.
Three new speed-reading machines, each connected to their own cameras, are also soon to be delivered to the traffic department.
Senior superintendent at the traffic department Pierre Kapp said the speed cameras have been signed for and are on their way to the department.
While they are currently involved in various law enforcement duties, Kapp said these new additions to their arsenal will intensify the traffic department's fight against law breakers who put people's lives at risk.
Kapp said the stretch of African Street with a speed limit of 40km/h, as well as the 60km/h speed limit zone of Cradock Road will be two areas to receive more attention in the near future.
Mandela Street in Tantyi location is also a 40km/h zone that needs monitoring due to many children making their way to school along the narrow road.
Many accidents around the country are speed-related and Kapp promises that the local traffic department will do their bit to enforce this part of the law.
He added that the number of cyclists and runners on the road will also be taken into consideration as motorists need to respect athletes.
However, he warned that anyone cycling without a helmet can't expect to come off lightly. The new traffic officials will also work closely with the various municipal departments with regards to local by-laws, Kapp said.
