    The winners in the 6th Annual Grahamstown Music Competition were:

    JUNIOR

    1 Annerike du Plessis (13) from Stellenbosch, piano – R3 500 sponsored by Unisa
    2 Beate Boshoff (10) from Bethlehem, piano – R1 000
    3 Colette du Toit (11) from Pretoria, piano – R750

    SENIOR

    1 Vivienne Janse van Rensburg (17) from Johannesburg, pedal harp – R3 500 sponsored by Unisa
    2 Adam Campbell (18) from Grahamstown, alto saxophone – R1 000
    3 Caryn Reed (17) from Bethlehem, piano – R750

    TERTIARY

    1 Paul Richard (26) from Grahamstown, alto saxophone – R3 500 sponsored by Unisa
    2 Leah Gunter (20) from Gordon's Bay, soprano – R2 000
    3 Thapela Masita (18) from Bloemfontein, cello – R1 000
    4 Christo Greyling (20) from Grahamstown, piano – R500

    This fourth prize in Tertiary was awarded because the adjudicators couldn't cut the finalists down to three! The University of the North-West Music School (via Tinus Botha, one of the two adjudicators) kindly donated R500 for the fourth prize.

    Best vocalist – Leah Gunter
    Woodwind – Renee Hartzenberg (19) from Pretoria, flute
    Debussy – Caryn Reed
    Most promising entrant from Grahamstown – Christo Greyling
    Best performance of a South African work – Thapela Masita
