Two Rhodes University residences were targeted by thieves on the same night last week, resulting in two stolen laptops and a broken lock.
The two laptops, belonging to students in one of the Stanley Kidd men's residence annexes, are believed to have been stolen around 9pm on Thursday. Both students were not in their rooms at the time and in one incident, the thief reportedly managed to reach the laptop by forcing open a partially closed window.
“The lights were on in the rooms and [the thieves]could see the laptops,” said Stanley Kidd house warden Douglas Eastman. “[Students] need to make sure that their belongings are not close to their windows,” he warned. On the same night, thieves attempted to break into the Adelaide Tambo residence warden's flat.
Anonymous sources from the residence explained that the warden’s sister-in-law, who was in the flat that day, discovered that the lock to her room door, which is a spare room in the flat, had been broken. The intruders reportedly fled before they could be identified. No items were stolen.
Both the Campus Protection Unit and the university’s communications division had not commented on the matter by the time Grocott's Mail went to press and the police had not made any arrests.
