Denton, De Maar prove champions

Close to 150 karateka competed at this year’s East Cape Shotokan-Ryu (ECSR) and Rhodes University Shotokan Karate Championships last weekend, at Rhodes campus.

Close to 150 karateka competed at this year’s East Cape Shotokan-Ryu (ECSR) and Rhodes University Shotokan Karate Championships last weekend, at Rhodes campus.

Brit Denton (Rhodes) was the winner of the women's open kata and kumite categories, while Nolan De Maar (ECSR) went on to win the men's open kata and kumite categories. Both Denton and De Maar have previously represented the Junior Protea national team. Forty-one percent of the entrants in the championships were girls and women.

Local karateka will be hoping for good results at the SASKA National Championships (Benoni) and the SASKA East Coast Karate open Championships (Fish River Sun Hotel and Country Club Resort), in July and August respectively.

In the club results, ECSR finished with a total of 62 medals (21 gold, 18 silver and 23 bronze); Makana Karate Club finished with 47 medals (21 gold, 18 silver and 8 bronze). Joza was third in the club results with 39 medals (11 gold, 14 silver and 14 bronze), followed by Rhodes with 16 medals (4 gold, 6 silver and 6 bronze) and Fingo with 6 medals (2 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze).
