Members of the Grahamstown Parents' Network (GPN) gave back-to-school packs to more than 300 Grade 1 pupils from different schools in Grahamstown East on Tuesday.

The schools that benefited from the donation were NV Cewu Primary and Makana Primary (both in Joza), Andrew Moyake Primary in Fingo, St Mary's Day Care Centre and the Child Welfare. Kelly Long from the Molteno Literacy Project, who helped to identify the schools, accompanied the GPN's co-ordinator Susan Powers to deliver the donations.

Powers said that members of the GPN put together some money last year to host a Christmas party for more than 200 children, but after the party they still had funds to spare. After we held a meeting with the members we decided to buy stationery for school kids with the money that was left over, she said.

Other sponsors like Pick n Pay, ABM Office International, Suzi-Q and Postnet also contributed to buy the school packs, she added. The packs consisted of pencils, sharpeners, erasers and crayons. They were divided according to the number of Grade 1s in a school, with NV Cewu receiving 80 school packs, Makana 100, Andrew Moyake 17, and 85 for St Mary's.

Speaking to Grocott's Mail after the hand-over, NV Cewu principal Anele Ndyolashe thanked the donors and the Molteno Literacy Project for identifying his school as one of the beneficiaries. He said they had been working very closely with the Molteno Project. "They equip our foundation phase teachers and learners with reading and writing skills. Last year our school did well in their evaluation tests, so maybe because of that they thought that we deserve this stationery."
